Three Advanced to State Competition
The Association of Texas Small School Bands is pleased to announce the selection of the 2010 ATSSB All- State Band. More than 9,000 high school band students from across the state of Texas auditioned in 20 different regions for a place in their respective All-Region bands. The top chairs in each region advanced to one of five area auditions held on January 9, across the state and only 240 of these 1360 students were selected for all- state honors.
The ATSSB All-State Bands rehearsed in San Antonio, Texas from February 10-13, and presented a concert on Saturday, February 13 in Ballroom A of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. Admission was free to the public.
Maricruz Bustamante, Tomas Rivera, and Steven Rodriguez, members of the Crystal City High School Mighty Javelina Band were selected as members of the 2010 ATSSB All-State Band. The students are directed by Joe Honstein, assisted by Noel Navejas, Tyler King, and Josh Gray. This is the first time that Steven Rodriguez has reached such a milestone. This is Tomas Rivera’s second time making the All-State Band. This is also Maricruz Bustamante’s third time making the All-State Band which is quite a feat to accomplish. Their parents, school, and community should be extremely proud of their accomplishments. Maricruz is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolfo and Diana Bustamante; Steven is the son of Cirildo and Celia Rodriguez; Tomas is the son of Ricky Rivera and Marizza Garcia.
“Congratulations to these fine young musicians and their parents for all they have done for them,” said Band Director Joe Honstein.
Area Results: Tomas Rivera 1st chair in the baritone division. Steven Rodriguez 3rd chair in the tuba division. Maricruz Bustamante placed 4th chair in the Bb Clarinet division.
“We also congratulate the other members of the Mighty Javelina band who competed at the ATSSB Area South All-State band Tryouts,” said band Director Honstein. They are Barbara McHazlett (tuba division), Raul Martinez (trombone division), Daniel Guerrero (baritone division), Kallie McCoy and Leah Guerrero (flute division), AnMarie Castillo (bass clarinet division), Evelina Guerrero and Adrianna Ramirez (Bb clarinet division) and Linda Gomez (trumpet division).
